Bergen kunsthall, 2025

Video installation, performance

Co-production: Bergen Internasjonale Teater

Description

The work examines how Bergen’s shoreline is shaped and valued through property development.

Using the view from Bergen Kunsthall over the pond Lille Lungegårdsvann as its starting point, the work draws parallels between the privileged view of the water and actual access to the shoreline.

A faint smell of tar spreads through the space… creating a sense of unease within the seemingly controlled office landscape.

Background

A conversation with my mother brought back a story about my grandparents, who would simply cross the street from their home in central Bergen, step into their boat, and head out onto the water. What was once an everyday point of access has become something increasingly exclusive. It made me wonder: who is the water for now, and where did all the boats go?

The work began with walking along Bergen’s shoreline, staying as close to the water as possible from start to finish. This route challenged established patterns of movement and revealed how the city’s built environment directs where and how we move. Trying to remain by the water led to unexpected places and to the discovery that much of the shoreline is inaccessible without a key card.
